Japan is getting a brand-new anime award, and it already has a date and a venue. TOKYO ANIME NEXT announced on its official X account that the first Nippon Anime Awards (日本アニメアワード) will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2027 at SGC HALL ARIAKE in Ariake, Tokyo.

What was announced

The announcement came on the final day of TOKYO ANIME NEXT, the four-day event that ran in Ikebukuro from October 30 to November 2. Alongside the date and venue, the organizers shared the award's concept line: "Move a single frame. Move hearts. Move the world." The stated goal is an anime award that represents Japan and stays loved for a long time, not a one-off ceremony.

TOKYO ANIME NEXT itself is organized by the Association of Japanese Animations, with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as co-host, so this is an industry-backed effort rather than a fan poll or a media outlet's year-end list.

How it got here

The idea was laid out in public a few days earlier. On October 30, a TIFFCOM symposium titled "Toward the start of a new anime award in 2027" brought together producer Yuichiro Saito, known for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children, Satoru Shimizu, an AJA director and president of A-1 Pictures, and Masaya Saito from Toho's anime division. Having a studio head and a major distributor on that stage tells me the award is meant to carry real weight inside the business.

My take

Nothing has been said yet about categories, eligibility or how winners will be chosen, and that is the part I care about most. An award is only as meaningful as its selection process, and a year of lead time leaves plenty of room to get that right. The venue, a big modern hall in Tokyo's bay area, suggests a proper televised-scale event. I'll be watching for the rules and the first category list, and I'll share them here when they land.
