Apple Makes Romantic AI Companion Apps 18+ on the App Store Starting November 16
Apple adds a Dating and Relationships age descriptor that covers virtual companions with romantic content, forcing an 18+ rating by January 12, 2027.

If you use an AI character chat app on iPhone, especially the anime-styled "waifu" and roleplay companions that are everywhere right now, expect some of them to become adults-only soon. Apple told developers that App Store Connect is adding new age rating content descriptors starting November 16, 2026.
What changes
When developers fill in the age rating questionnaire, they will now have to declare two things:
- Dating and Relationships: features that connect real people for dating or relationships, or a virtual companion that engages users in sexual or romantic content.
- Shared Location: sharing a user's real-world location with another person or group.
Any app that declares Dating and Relationships gets a minimum 18+ rating. Developers have to answer the new questions with their next update, and every app must have them completed by January 12, 2027. In Brazil, local rules set A16 for location sharing and A18 for dating features, though family location apps can ask the country's Ministry of Justice and Public Security for an official lower rating.
Why this matters for character AI fans
Dating apps were already mostly 18+. The real shift is that Apple now names virtual companions in the same breath. Apps built around a flirty AI girlfriend or boyfriend, or general chatbots where romance is just one mode, will have to choose: drop the romantic content or accept the 18+ label. That can mean being filtered out for teen accounts under parental controls.
I think this is overdue. These apps lean on the same character archetypes anime fans love, and many of them clearly market to younger users. A clear label is better than guessing what a companion will say next. The open question is enforcement: the declaration comes from developers, so how Apple checks apps that "forget" to flag romance will decide whether this rule has teeth. Apple's developer notice has the full wording.
