Google Suncatcher Satellite Runs Gemma 4 on a TPU in Orbit and Sends Back a Haiku

Google says its prototype space AI satellite passed its Hello World test. Radiation and heat tests come next, with twin linked satellites planned for 2027.

A small satellite with blue solar wings above the curve of the Earth, sending three glowing lines down like a short poem

Google says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has passed its "Hello World" test: an open AI model running on a data-center-class TPU in orbit answered a prompt and sent the answer back down to Earth.

What happened

The satellite, built with Planet, went up on October 1. Over the following weeks the team worked through its commissioning checklist, powering up the host computer and the TPU trays and running early machine learning tests. Then, during a ground-station pass, they sent a prompt to the onboard Gemma 4 open model and asked for a haiku about being in space. As the satellite passed over Svalbard, Norway, this came back:

Blue marble below

Data streams in silent grace

Starlight feeds my core.

After that, the team tried space-themed limericks and prompts that asked the model to report on the status of the payload's systems.

Why it matters

Suncatcher is Google's long-term research project on whether AI computing could one day run in space. A poem is a cute test, but the real point is proof that the chip, the software and the ground link all work together up there. The next round of tests is the hard part: checking how the TPUs cope with heat stress and radiation in orbit. If that goes well, Google's next milestone is a pair of linked satellites in 2027.

My take

What I like here is that the model in orbit is Gemma, the same open model family that people run on their own PCs. It is a reminder that "AI in space" is not a secret black box, just familiar software on very unusual hardware. I would still rather read the radiation results than another haiku, so that is the update I am waiting for.
