Witch on the Holy Night trailer brings back supercell with Nagi Yanagi on the theme song

The ufotable film uses the new supercell song Yoru to Ao and opens worldwide from January 21, 2027 after its November 20 Japan debut.

A lit mansion on a snowy hill under a full moon at night, with music notes drifting toward the sky

Crunchyroll has put a new English trailer for Witch on the Holy Night online, and this one is built around a sound a lot of us have been waiting years to hear again: a brand-new supercell song. The theme is called "Yoru to Ao" (Night and Blue), the project of producer ryo, with Nagi Yanagi back on vocals.

Why the song matters

For fans of the original TYPE-MOON visual novel, this pairing is not random. supercell and Nagi Yanagi also did the ending theme of the 2012 game, so the film is closing the loop with the same creative team behind the music people remember from Aoko's first outing. It is also the first time in roughly fifteen years that Yanagi has sung a new supercell track, and ryo has said the project is what woke the group up again. That alone makes the trailer worth a listen even if you've never played the game.

Release dates outside Japan

The film, animated by ufotable and directed by Masaru Takeuchi, opens in Japan on November 20, 2026. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment then roll it out worldwide in January 2027, in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub:

  • January 21: Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the earliest date on the list
  • January 28: Australia, New Zealand, much of Latin America and several European countries
  • January 29: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and India
  • February 5: Spain and Kazakhstan

Haruka Tomatsu voices Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa plays Alice Kuonji, and Yusuke Kobayashi is Soujyuro Shizuki.

My take

ufotable adapting a Kinoko Nasu story is about as safe a bet as anime gets visually, but what I'm most curious about is pacing. The visual novel is a slow, atmospheric small-town story more than an action piece, and a single film has to choose what to keep. Having the original music team back is a good sign the staff cares about that mood.
