Canva has launched Brush, its first vision-language model built specifically for editing designs. Canva Research announced it on October 29. It's already powering supported edits in Canva AI for Canva Pro subscribers, and wider availability is coming soon.

Brush arrives a week after Craft, Canva's first image-generation model. The two are meant to work together: Craft makes the image, and Brush reworks the design around it. Both came out of Canva Research, the company's 160-person AI lab.

What it does

Brush looks at a design, works out how it's built, and makes the change you describe. That can be one line of copy or every slide in a deck. Under the hood it runs an agentic loop. It writes and runs code to adjust design elements, then checks the page to decide its next step. The result stays fully editable, so text, images, colours and layouts remain normal Canva elements you can keep tweaking by hand.

Canva says Brush is up to 69% faster on general editing tasks than its previous design agent, at 46% lower cost per edit. In internal testing it matched or beat the old setup on most tasks, and it did especially well at restyling and adapting designs to new formats.

How it was trained

Brush started from a leading open-weights model. Canva then post-trained it on real design and editing tasks, using anonymised insights from people who opted in, and followed up with large-scale reinforcement learning. The reward system scores visual quality, layout and whether the task was actually completed, against standards set by Canva's professional designers.

Trying it

Open a design, or attach one in Canva AI, and pick Brush from the model dropdown. Canva suggests a few starting points:

  • Restyle an image's colours, weather or mood
  • Change headers across a multi-page design in one request
  • Turn a presentation slide into an Instagram graphic

For fan artists making event posters or channel banners, the format remixing alone could save a lot of time. Canva says Brand Kit support and better handling of image-heavy layouts are next. Details are in Canva's announcement.
