Nexus Mods Will Not Ban AI Mods, but Now Demands Labels and Blocks AI Training by Default
New Nexus Mods rules require AI disclosure tags, tool lists for AI-assisted mods, and default Ask Me permissions that bar AI training on hosted mods.

Nexus Mods, one of the biggest homes for PC game mods, has rewritten its rules on AI, and the result is not a ban. Instead, the site is betting on labels, permissions and a lot more transparency. The new policy comes with a 60-day grace period that started on November 3, 2026.
Every new upload has to declare AI use
Anyone uploading a mod now has to say whether generative AI touched the files, assets or even the mod page. Nexus splits this into three tags:
- AI-Generated for mods where AI produced most of the code, voices, dialogue, textures, music or other core content.
- AI Media for AI-made thumbnails, promo art, videos or page descriptions that are not part of the mod itself.
- AI Assisted for human-led mods where AI played a supporting role, such as texture upscaling or audio cleanup.
The last tag comes with homework. Authors have to list the specific tools they used and exactly which AI output ended up in the final files, and the page needs evidence of human-led work, such as version control history. Players also get controls to hide AI-generated content from game pages and the homepage.
Your mods cannot be fed to a model by default
The part I find most interesting for creators is the new permission setting for AI training. It defaults to "Ask Me" on every hosted file, old ones included, which means nobody can use those meshes, scripts, textures or audio to train or fine-tune a generative model without the author's written permission. Nexus says it will not train on mods itself or license them to anyone who does. The same update tightens rules on forks and requires derivative mods to credit the whole chain of original creators.
Why not just ban it?
Nexus argues that AI already runs through modding, from code autocompletion to voice generation, and a ban would only push people to hide it. Agree with that or not, it is one of the clearest AI policies any large gaming community has published. The full rules are in the Nexus Mods AI policy, and the grace period runs out on January 2, 2027.
