Kuromi Gets Her First Starring Anime Movie, Coming to Japanese Theaters in 2027
Sanrio marked Kuromi's birthday by announcing her first theatrical anime film as the lead, distributed by GAGA, with a teaser visual and video.

Kuromi picked the perfect day to make her move. On October 31, her official birthday, Sanrio announced that the mischievous little rabbit-ish rival of My Melody is getting her first-ever starring role in a theatrical animated film, set to open in Japanese theaters in 2027.
What's confirmed so far
- A theatrical anime film with Kuromi as the lead, a first for the character since her 2005 debut
- GAGA is handling planning and distribution
- Japanese release in 2027; Sanrio says screenings in other countries and regions will be announced once they're settled
- A celebratory teaser visual and a special video, featuring her loyal sidekick Baku in voice as well
- An official movie site is live at kuromithemovie.com
No release date, story, staff or cast has been revealed yet. Sanrio says details will roll out step by step.
Kuromi, in her own words
The announcement came with a message from Kuromi herself, in full boss mode: she brags that a movie starring her is officially happening, credits her fans (the KUROMIES) for cheering her on, and tells everyone to look forward to her big moment. Very on brand.
Why this one is a big deal
Kuromi has spent the last few years quietly turning into one of Sanrio's biggest names, especially with fans who like their cute with a bit of attitude. Her "#世界クロミ化計画" campaign (roughly, a plan to "Kuromi-fy" the world) is all about becoming the version of yourself you want to be, and in 2025 she even made a major-label debut as the artist KUROMI. A solo film feels like the natural next step, and honestly, a long overdue one.
For fans outside Japan, the key line is the one about overseas release: there's no international date yet, but Sanrio is already saying it plans to announce one. I'll be watching for the first trailer and any word on a worldwide rollout.
