Kakan Ruirui: The Caged Lantern of Yomi Is a Voltage and Toei Animation Otome Game for Switch in 2027

Otome fans, this one is worth bookmarking. Voltage and Toei Animation have announced Kakan Ruirui: The Caged Lantern of Yomi, a brand-new otome game for Nintendo Switch planned for 2027, and it will ship with English support alongside Japanese.

A Toei Animation otome game

The pairing is the surprise here. Voltage is a familiar name in romance games, and this new title comes out under its console label AmuLit, home of even if TEMPEST and Neon Clash -Echoes of the Lost-. Toei Animation, best known for its anime, is co-producing it. The two companies describe it as a Japanese-style dark fantasy adventure, and its tagline is "It all begins with a life lost."

The staff list is the real hook

Illustrations: Kazuki Yone, the artist behind the Hakuoki series
Scenario: Ririka Yoshimura, writer of Neon Clash and Cupid Parasite, who also co-directs with Voltage's Rei Misaki
Background art: Naohiro Yuuki
Music: Yamato of Heart Company
Theme song: Arika
Development producer from HYDE

Yone's art on a dark, Japanese-themed story is going to feel like home to anyone who loved Hakuoki, and Yoshimura already proved with Cupid Parasite that she can write leads with real bite.

What is next

The first teaser video premieres at the AmuLit booth at Animate Girls Festival 2026 in Ikebukuro on November 7 and 8, where visitors also get a character booklet and a shopping bag showing the main cast. The main characters are set to be revealed on November 7 at 12:00 JST. I will be watching for that reveal, because the love interests decide everything in a game like this.

The full announcement is in Toei Animation's official press release.
