Firefly's Bride Casts Natsuko Abe as Aoi, Satoko's Gentle Mentor in the Courtesan Quarter
Natsuko Abe joins the airing Noitamina anime as Aoi, the kind courtesan who guides Satoko, while Yukari and Nitobe round out the Tennyo Island cast.
The cast of Firefly's Bride (Hotaru no Yomeiri) keeps growing while the show is already on the air. The anime's official X account has introduced Natsuko Abe as Aoi, and her arrival matters more than a typical mid-season casting note, because Aoi is the person who teaches Satoko how to survive once she is pulled into the courtesan quarter of Tennyo Island.
Who Aoi is
According to the official character page, Aoi is Satoko's mentor in that world. She is easygoing and gentle, sometimes to a fault: other courtesans have been known to steal her customers. She also has a lover who, lately, has stopped showing up. That one line already hints at a quieter, sadder thread running alongside Satoko and Shinpei's very loud, very dangerous romance.
In her comment, Abe describes Aoi as a woman who puts love above everything, someone who watches Satoko and Shinpei's relationship and gets swept up in every high and low of it. She adds that what makes Aoi lovable is the sorrow and gloom she carries underneath, not just the cheerful side.
Filling out the pleasure quarter
The character roster on the official site now also lists Kanon Amaki as Yukari, the second most popular courtesan at the Isekichi house, who has feelings for Shinpei and treats Satoko as a rival, and Kazuyuki Okitsu as Nitobe Eishin, the quiet, serious son of the police superintendent. Between Aoi's warmth and Yukari's hostility, it looks like Satoko's new surroundings will be as tense as the Kirigaya household she left behind.
Where to watch
The series, adapted from Oreko Tachibana's manga and produced by david production under director Takahiro Kamei, airs Fridays at 11:30 p.m. JST on Fuji TV's Noitamina block. I'm curious how much screen time Aoi gets; a mentor who knows heartbreak firsthand feels like exactly the counterweight this story needs.
